It can be really hard to watch people do dumb things. My sister and her husband are broke. She's in the midst of starting a new business, so they only have one income (well, two, because her hubby works two jobs). Oh yeah, and she's pregnant, so they need a family car.
So, with the litany of practical, reliable, and affordable family haulers out there, what do they chose? A 10 year old Escalade with 84k miles. I don't know any other details. I kinda don't want to either. Just fucking dumb.

Yeah since when does having one kid equate to having to get a big sloth of an SUV? Hell my mom hauled the 2 of us in a goddamn Chevette, Sundance, and Loyale 4WD wagon. I dont remember being pressed for space ever

For their one kid? That doesn't make any sort of sense.

Our family cars growing up were all coupes.

There was all kinds of boring, safe, reliable, FWD wagons and sedans that would be great for staring a family for sale here over the last few months. (under and around 6K) Nobody should every buy an Escalade.

Well, how much does a 10 year old Escalade go for anyway? Probably not that much, and 84k isn't that high of mileage. They bought a fancy Tahoe, so it likely won't require any ridiculous maintenance. I don't know what the new business is, but could the Escalade be useful for the business purposes? People buy SUVs for businesses all the time. Without being closer to the situation, I can't say it's that dumb of a decision.

My Mom transported me and my sister around in a fucking Chevy Prizm. Hell, we even went on vacation with it to Maine.
I get that having a larger car makes things easier, but one doesn't need a fucking extended cab SUV just to drive their kids around in. People just overreact so hard these days.

lol no doubt. Where did come from on vacation up here to Maine?
My mom drove us to Florida from CT in the goddamn Sundance once. Bold move knowing the autoboxes in those things...

When things started getting dicey at my old job, I started coming up with all these business ideas to go out and start my own business. Being that my wife and I are just starting out, and don't have the money necessary to do anything yet, I pretty much just had to be mature and walk away from them for now. So many other problems with the situation besides the Escalada. Sounds like that's just the icing on the cake.

No, the Escalade has zero business use. Blue book for an '04 Escalade with 84k miles is $14-15k. So, they spent about as much as I did for a family hauler, but theirs is 7 years older, has 2.5 times the mileage, and gets horrible MPG. If they weren't broke, then I wouldn't care. But they are broke, so it really bothers me.

Our parents were always self-employed, so we are well aware of both the ups and the downs of it. I'm very proud of her for starting the business, and of her husband for working two jobs to make it happen. I'd like to see them finally get a break, but .....

It was from Western New York. Not nearly as long as CT to Florida, but it was still like an 11 hour trip in a very small car. It's totally doable, however.

I'm not saying they shouldn't. I think self-starters are still the backbone of America. It just seems like a bad time to be trying it...

On the surface it didn't seem like that bad of a decision, trucks do hold up to mileage better if they're not being used for work. Realistically they just wanted to look like ballers, yolo, but I can think of a few scenarios where the situation as originally described isn't that bad.

The more space you have, the more crap you find to fill it up with. I know too many people who buy a huge car after having one child, somehow fill the entire thing, and say "Boy, I don't know how we would have done it with our last car!"
We do just fine with one child in our Sonata. Hell, we could fit an additional 2 small-ish passengers if we needed to.
